The Menil Collection
Free private art museum on a leafy residential block in Montrose. The grey cypress-clad main building by Renzo Piano is the photogenic exterior; the surrounding lawn and live oaks make it feel more like a park than a museum.

What works here
Shoot the exterior from the south lawn under the oaks — the canopy diffuses the Texas sun perfectly for portraits. Inside, photos are restricted in many galleries; check posted rules per room. The campus also includes Rothko and Twombly nearby.
Plan the shoot
Mid-morning on a weekday, or late afternoon for raking light on the cypress siding
Filtered, diffused light on the lawn most of the day; harsh contrast in open sun midday.
Low to moderate; busiest on First Friday evenings
Free lot on Sul Ross; overflow on West Alabama side streets
Very low — residential block
No permit required.
